SGIN Annual General Meeting

June 14 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm ADT

Smart Grid Innovation Network Canada will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 14th, 2022. The AGM will be held virtually on Microsoft Teams. All SGIN member levels are welcome to attend!

About the AGM event:

Join us for an overview of the 2021 year in review, the successes and key observations from the work and interactions with various organizations, and highlights of the strategic plan and upcoming activities for 2022-2023! This year’s AGM will feature special guest speakers from Canadian Climate Institute and Natural Resources Canada who will present on The Big Switch and Federal Government Innovation Programs and Policy.

  • Caroline Lee (Canadian Climate Institute),
  • Jason Dion (Canadian Climate Institute),
  • Jen Hiscock (Natural Resources Canada),
  • Bronwyn Lazowski (Natural Resources Canada).

Canadian Climate Institute will describe how reaching Canada’s climate targets requires a big switch from fossil fuel energy to clean electricity. Their presentation will explore both the technical and policy changes needed in Canada’s electricity systems to achieve net zero goals. Caroline will detail the technical changes needed to make Canada’s electricity systems bigger, cleaner, and smarter, while Jason will describe policies for an electric federalism that can drive Canada’s big switch in a way that can succeed in the Canadian federation.

Federal responsibilities recommended in the Big Switch include: strengthening climate policy in the electricity sector; leveraging public funds to reduce rate impacts; and pursuing greater coordination with predictable funding NRCan will present on how Innovation Programs and Policy can advance these efforts even in the absence of negotiated agreements at the national level. In particular, NRCan’s Innovation & Electricity Regulation Initiative is exploring mechanisms to offer a degree of coordination and experimentation for provinces, territories and their regulators which can accelerate innovation for utilities and electricity and electrification service providers.
