News Release: Launching Canada’s Energy Data Trust (EDT)
Unlocking Ethical, Secure Access to Energy Data for a Sustainable Future
The Smart Grid Innovation Network Canada (SGIN), in collaboration with national and international partners, is proud to announce the launch of the Energy Data Trust (EDT) – a national initiative to unlock secure, governed, and ethical access to energy data in support of Canada’s clean energy transition.
Across Canada, innovators, policymakers, utilities, and communities face a common barrier: limited access to trusted, sharable energy data. Energy data access is needed to enable the clean energy transition and investment. The EDT addresses this gap by facilitating data sharing and transactions, accelerating innovation, informing smarter decisions, and enabling the clean energy transition.
This initiative directly supports the recommendations of the Canada Electricity Advisory Council (CEAC), reflects SGIN’s core mission to lead smart energy innovation and accelerate Canada’s transition to a clean energy future, and aligns with the common priority this initiative represents among the founding organisations.
EDT Vision: To create a trustworthy, secure platform that enables national and international collaboration to share FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) energy data, driving applied research and innovation among policymakers, researchers, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), utilities, and businesses toward a sustainable, reliable, affordable, and inclusive all-energy future.
EDT Mission: To independently facilitate the secure, ethical sharing of energy and energy-related data from utilities and other stakeholders, fostering innovation and transparency to support the energy transition, while respecting and protecting the custodial requirements of data owners.
The EDT is collaborating with a coalition of respected partners including:
- Smart Grid Innovation Network Canada
- University of New Brunswick (NB-IRDT, Emera & NB Power Research Centre)
- Energy Modelling Hub
- ACENET
- Portfolio
- Screaming Power
- International partners:
- Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Institute
- Mission:data Coalition
- The Carbon Zero Institute of Trinidad and Tobago
We invite clean energy leaders, researchers, utilities, NGOs, regulators, and innovators to join us in shaping Canada’s clean energy data future through the Energy Data Trust.
We encourage the support of this and other national energy initiatives by joining SGIN and becoming a member. Together, we can unlock the full potential of energy data and a clean energy transition — for Canada and beyond.
Stay tuned for more information coming soon!
